We suffered a major house fire on October 12, 2009 and it has closed down our rescue while we rebuild as most of the house is a total loss.  We are asking the public for help to get us back up and running sooner rather then later To donate and help us rebuild: Donations at any Inland Northwest Bank branch for the Dachshund Rescue NW/Mossburgs Fire Relief Fund.  Or mail to Margo Mossburg, PO Box 1383, Airway Heights, WA, 99001.  The PayPal address is dragoonfr@hotmail.com  Thanks in advance for anything you can do.
We are running out of storage for physical items so we are looking for gift cards or cash rather then things please.  I hate doing that but with no house or garage storage is an issue now and will be for about six months until we get a home again.
More details and photos with links to written and video news stories below.  Thanks in advance for offers of help and labor.  We will be in touch as soon as we can or when we can figure how to put people to work and once we are done wrangling with insurance people on what is covered and what is not.
Sincerely,
Margo Mossburg, Director, Dachshund Rescue NW and Dachshund Club of Spokane
PS A huge thank you to those who have already donated to get us back open again.  You are greatly appreciated.

October, 13, 2009 5:00 p.m.
For those who do not know we have suffered a major housefire on Monday, October 12.
First of all I sincerely thank everyone for your offers of help to us and our beloved dogs and our dog rescue.  We are being currently being overwhelmed with offers of help, well wishes, dinner and staying at home offers and prayers.  I am removing the voice mails as fast as possible from our home phone voicemail so folks can leave messages for us both.  Folks always want calls back though.  I am returning them as fast as I possbly can in between trying to rest and being short of breath trying to take in breathing treatments.
For those who do not know I damaged my lungs in the burning house saving as many dogs as we could but well worth damaging my lungs to save the babies in danger.  There was no carbon monoxide poisoning even though I was breathing nasty fumes for several minutes while getting all the babies out of the burning house but the smoke inhalation I do have to deal with for a bit.  That is what happens when you run into a burning home to save babies from certain death.  Small price to pay for me so I know the dogs were still alive.
Right now the emails are much easier for me to answer until I saw the 300+ emails that I needed to answer.  Talking is very hard for me right now and for those who know me well know this is a complete torture.  Hahahaha.  So this is my bright idea to email everyone at once by giving you a link to this update.
Plus we do not have phone numbers (burned up and gone or some contacts are being stored at a friend's house but not at our hotel currently).  So unless you leave that phone number that you want called back on a voicemail message to us then I can't call back.  But please give us a few days to call you back.   I am guessing that we have received 200+ voicemails in the last two days too.  It is now a full time job just contacting everyone who has called or emailed.
Rest assured that the dogs that we were given to rescue are still alive and doing just fine.  We only lost our own personal pets NOT any of the rescued dogs as those are the ones that we saved from the burning house.  The dogs that we were entrusted with are doing just fine.  Some of them I just really needed help placing quickly so I turned to the shelter for immediate help.  They will adopt them quickly with all the calls they have gotten.
Because my lungs were damaged and I was having a very hard time breathing thus talking so I was forced to spend the night in the hospital on Monday evening.  But not before I knew all the critters in our care were safe.  They have released me late this afternoon about 3:00 p.m. so we grabbed some chow and now I am answering everyone as fast as I can in between incoming phone calls.
The dogs that we have left are our own personal dogs plus a few more rescues that needed a bit more training time before placement. Dear friends have those remaining dogs for us except for our Bad Baby Bogart who is with us at the hotel and wherever we go next.  We can not be completely wienerless of course.
We are obviously not taking in any more rescues until we have a home again.  But rest assured that once we have a house again then move in the dog rescue that we will be open the very next day.  That is our goal.  We have not been rescuing homeless wieners for 18 years now to stop now or to let something as small as a housefire ruin our spirits or our enthusiasm for help pets and their families.
Before the fire we have rescued 69 dogs this year alone and the rescue was on pace for a record year.  I still have a few more to place then we will be done rescuing for a bit.  But not for long.
As you can imagine we are exhausted, but doing just fine.  But Dennis and I are safe.  The dogs and other animals are now all safe and placed as needed.  So offers for helping with the dogs are not needed at this time.  We have that well covered.
Plus Dennis and I always land on our feet no matter what happens.  We will be just fine and we will take everyone up on their offers for help.  (Continued below the photos.)

Mopping up the house and garage

We saved one truck but the "Wienermobile"

was in the garage when it went, darn it.

We always look on the bright side no matter what situation that we happen to go through.  We miss the 7 dogs we lost but rejoice that we saved 16.  We were blessed we did not lose all our rescues or our whole home.  There is always a bright side even to a situation like this.
This is not our first set back and I am darn sure that it will not be our last.  We do not care about stuff that we lost like the house, contents, car or garage as that can always be replaced.  Hopefully we have enough insurance to cover and not worry about it if we do not.
All the dogs left that needed immediate homes and were sweet enough to be placed right away went to the Spokane Humane Society shelter in north Spokane.  We have worked with that shelter for many years.  We do know that they are caring and loving people so we completely trust them to place those rescues for us.  But they are also being overwhelmed with folks wanting to adopt our dogs we currently have available.  I am sure they will all be placed shortly.  As to adopt them you will need to contact the shelter directly as officially the rescues are theirs because we had to do something quickly.  Because I know folks in this community are wonderfully kind and caring those homeless babies will be placed very shortly if not already by the time I update this so they will not be in an animal shelter for very long.
But because our home is mostly gone and the rest is severely damaged the dog rescue is effectively closed.  All the dog club members and I are working feverishly to place the ones that we currently have.  Our personal pets we have left all have foster for us until we know where we are going.  We are homeless now as well, but folks are offering us help as well until we can hear back from insurance folks to see what was covered and what was not.
We have no idea if we were covered by insurance and to what extent.  We will have to wait up to three days to hear from an agent.  So as of tonight we have no idea what kind of help that we might need.  Why?  I am not able to go back inside the house right now to get any items.  Many things are smoke damaged so I am writing off most of everything we owned right now.  Plus it really hurts my lungs for a while to be around those nasty, smokey smells until I am healed up for a bit.  So we honestly really do not know what specific kind of help that we might need as of today.
I do know that we can not store a ton of items so it is much better if folks donate cash or gift cards for Walmart or restaurants so we can find meals.  That would be extremely helpful.  The storage areas are gone so as much as we love receiving more dog food, toys and dog treats instead of cash that is not an option at this time.  If you have gathered a few things already we of course find a place for them and put them to good use.  But gift cards to Walmart is always perfect as we give those to our foster folks to help feed our dogs that they have in their care.
Also we were asked to set up an account at a local bank.  Folks can now donate and help us get back into the "used wiener recycling."  Folks can donate at any local branch of Inland Northwest Bank under the Dachshund Rescue NW/Mossburg Fire Relief Fund.  Please be aware that we are not a business nor an official charity at this time because this is a dog hobby for us.  We did this out of love not to get donations.  So your donations are not tax deductible.  But thank you in advance for your kind consideration and help as all donations will direction affect how quickly that we can get back on our feet.
And we will be taking people up on their offers for meals and a place to stay too as time goes on.  As time goes by I might have to farm us out for a while too like we are doing with the critters if insurance does not help us there too.
So the biggest thing now is to figure out where we will be short term and long term.  But that can only be answered by insurance folks so we can tell folks where we will be.  Right now we have no clue but have no time to worry about that.  So we may be homeless right this second but that should not last long either.
I did not photos of our dead kitchen area in the shots below but we will not be staying at our home anytime soon is my guess.
Rest assured that we are not stressed nor worried about this situation.  God always provides as needed and we have enough prayers for us that I am sure we are well covered there too.  Plus our sense of humor is perfectly intact while we watch TV news stories and read the newspapers, etc., and making fun of each other as always.  I have seem some pretty horrible video and photos of me so far.  Hahahaha.  Folks who know us well know we always enjoy a good laugh with good friends and family.  "This too shall pass" as life always happens.  Sounds trite, but it is more then true as we have found.
So thanks again everyone.  We love each and every one of those who are offering to help us even if they do not know us personally.  We know we all have one thing in common, a deep love of animals, and a love those rascally Dachshunds specifically.  It is not a question of if we will reopen our dog rescue, it is only a question of when and the next few weeks will answer that for us too.  So we are learning some patience right now while we sort though what help we will need and how to contact everyone back in a timely manner.
       Bless you for caring.
       Sincerely,
       Margo and Dennis Mossburg

PS All our events that we were planning are going forward.  See at the Happy Halloweenie Party on October 25.  Please see the event page on page two of this site for those details.

More mopping up

October 15, 2009

Moving out of the hotel today and into a friend's home that have some of our dogs already.  So we are looking forward folks.  I still might have to farm out the horses to others for a while but still checking on that.   Our one wiener with us Bad Baby Bogart is depressed so it will be nice to let him play with some of his dog buds.  Steve should be here shortly and then a lot more to do.  Voice is getting better so I might be able to work the phones and return all the phone calls finally.

Sincerely,

Margo

I met with the house insurance people yesterday and yup contents are not covered.  They will end up gutting the first floor which is three bedrooms, one bath, kitchen, living room, and dining areas. The basement has one bedroom and laundry room and they are okay.  But at some point we have to move it all out so they can rebuild the first floor.

The car people are going to move our beloved Mercury Mountaineer out, what is left of it after the garage burned down around it, on Monday.  Then they will figure out what we owe versus what we paid then cut a check if we did not pay too much for the car to begin with.  Only had it a year so we shall see how much we get for a down payment to go buy a new one or a used one.

Folks are still offering to help us and we will need help like moving out of the house, etc.  But not right this second.  We will need to move out before winter though.  But right now we are working on moving horses off the property as we can't stay there this winter full time.  I will be back a lot of course and the neighbors are alway watching the place as they can see the whole place for us.  Not much left of value there any longer but still would need some help there in moving out. Plus nice having a friend stay in the RV for us to watch the place while we are gone.

And storing the things we do have they are soot or smokey so storing in people's homes is not an option.  There is a ton of clean up to be done on the stuff and really too stinky to store at a home so we will have to see about a storage unit.

So we are moving forward now that we have spoken with insurance folks.  Now we know which direction we shall need to go and our dog rescue will not be open until we can move into a sutiable home space to house our dog rescue again which sounds like not until spring.  In the meantime we can stay in a trailer there and rebuild.  We have done it in the past and we can do it again.

"To our lost Babies.  You are gone now, but never forgotton below. We will rebuild then help many more homeless wiener dogs like you down the road.  Good bye and we miss you.  Love, Dennis and Margo  PS We know you were enjoying a good life with us until someone wanted to adopt you as their own.  You were more then welcome to be ours too until a new home was yours also.  That rehoming for you all was not meant to be and we know we will see you again someday."

Taking one day at a time here.  We are gearing up for a fundraiser this Sunday we were already planning for the First Annual Happy Halloweenie Party (see page two of this site for details.)  I have refused to cancel this and no rescuable dogs will be there so less work for me.  I want to have some fun and let folks know we are both okay.

As of yesterday there was only one of our placeable rescues left to be placed from the shelter.  Not sure is Nakita found a home yet or not.  They are not open yet when I am typing this.  With those dogs placed I have two rescues left to place at this web site here: http://www.drnw.petfinder.com  Both of these special needs dogs, Diva and Bob are in foster and not at the shelter.  Once Diva and Bobbo find homes then we will have placed 71 dogs in 2009 alone.

I think my new favorite song is by Kenny Chesney, "I'm Alive."  I survived a nasty car wreck a while ago and I will survive this too.  So will Dennis.  He is a trooper and going to work and moving forward as well.

Thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

Margo

House fire update from the Wiener Ranch!  Still working on insulating what is left of the house so the pipes do not freeze this winter and watching it rain in what is left of the living room.  Have a message or two from house insurance adjusters but nothing moving forward there of course.  We decided it was too much of a commute to keep working at the farm and stay in town so we are back working here daily on recovering some items we can keep.  Fun getting all black daily.

Had a large fundraiser at a local dog club for our First Annual Happy Halloweenie Dog Party and it was so much fun except for the photos of all the babies we lost of course.  Thanks Carolyn for posting those for everyone.  She had photos of  the house fire there as well so I did my best to avoid that table during the event.  It was hard seeing those photos of the lost ones.  But Dennis and I are concentrating on moving forward and getting reopened so we can rescue dogs again like we have since 1991.  It does not feel right not having too many dogs underfoot.

Once we need to move out of the house then we will need some bodies to help us move out.  Had to figure out storage of smoke filled items first though.  No one wants those items in their home making their place smell too.

So I am breathing much better but still get tired quickly while still breathing.  But we accidently erased some phone messages off the voicemail so I am not able to call folks back.  Many of our contact numbers have burned of course.  So if you still need a call please leave me a message at 509-796-2140 as we can access our voice mail.  But email is always the best way to reach me.  The email address is dragoonfr@hotmail.com

Okay another day of house insulating before winter and watching it rain on what is left of the living room.  I am watching the sub flooring buckle so it will cost the insurance folks even more to fix of course but they seem to have their own time lines which has nothing to do with the real world.  The longer they wait the more of the structure is leaving so now I am wondering instead of trying to build on what is left, which is not much, if it would be cheaper to bull doze and start over.  Just a thought.

I am going car shopping shortly to find another Wienermobile so we will be all set up with another SUV to transport dogs back and forth to events and the vet once we are open again as the previous SUVwas perfect for events and gas mileage as well as winters here.  Geico for car insurnace has been all over this car claim so moved quickly to get us the rental van (I hate the VAN!  Hate it!  No vans in my future.  Hahahaha.) and to get us a new car.  I did find it amusing they kept asking questions about mileage, etc., not realizing not much was left of the car.  Impressive how much was not there after the fire and I sent photos to show it was gone, completely gone.  "Sorry no idea on mileage when every piece that is not steel is history."

At some point I will need help with horse fencing too as some was damaged the day of the fire.  I may be calling in some buds to help replace and fix that as well before winter.

Thanks everyone for all your help thus far while we are rebuilding our lives.  I swear people are more upset about our house being gone then we are.  Dennis and I have always looked forward and not back unless we need to learn from mistakes of course.  We will be reopen for rescuing.  It is only a matter of when not if we will be "recycling used wieners" once again.  Your donations and kind words are sincerely appreciated.

November 10, 2009

Okay we have been cleaning and cleaning and cleaning here still.  Taking our time going through slowly the stuff that we think survived and can still be used.  Meeting with a contractor soon to get a brand new house so there is a light at the end of the tunnel there and still arguing with the insurance people

I am writing out thank you cards almost daily for folks donating for helping or sending us nice cards about the dogs we lost.  Dennis and I both thank everyone for their kindness.  We will be putting people to work as soon as we know what the contractor needs from us.

After weeks of looking I have found several newer SUVs that can be our new Wienermobile.  We are going car shopping today and should come home with something nice.  The dogs we take to events all the time should ride in style.  Our last Mercury Mountaineer was perfect and took a long time to find it, but I think I have several choices of another perfect car.  Dennis and I will flip a coin to see who gets to drive home the SUV and who gets to drive home the rented mini van.  We are NOT mini van people we have found out.  Hahahaha.

I am breathing much better but I am still not 100% yet.  I doubt I will be be for some time every time the cold air hits my lungs here, but getting better each day.  I am no longer couching constantly or getting winded and tired going up and down stairs or while walking.  I can not recommend searing your lungs with super heated smoke for anyone, but we all do as we must to save the ones we adore evern with flames overhead while running inside a burning building.  Or course I get some time to watch TV or a movie and wouldn't you know it I see a fire.  The nightmares are receding as well as I can tell you I was scared while trying to hold my breath.  But still I keep telling folks it was worth it.  We had to get those dogs out of the house.  I threw them in dog crates and tossed them outside for Dennis to remove from the house.  I would not let him enter as two of us did not need lungs that were killed.  So he was fine from that day.  I will be fine again as I am too active of a person to not be healthy enough to do my critters.  But I am cathcing up on more of my favorite Tv shows lately or sleeping more.  That relaxing was a luxury while the dog rescue was running.  But not my idea of a vacation of course.

Now and then it hits me when I keep trying to go hug one of the lost dogs.  I can't get my head around that they are gone and no longer need us.  Makes me cry every time but that is getting better every time I hug one of the babies that made it that day along with us.

Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers. Soon we will have a bigger and better home and garage so we can go forward with rescuing and saving the wiener babies that we have not even met yet.

Gearing up for the Annual Wiener Xmas Party on December 6th.  See page two of this site for event details.  FUN!  Can't wait for all the chow and good friends.

Sincerely, Margo

December 2009

Clean, clean, clean!  Story of our lives lately but looking good outside.  No more garbage where the garage and outbuildings used to be.  The big pile of garbage thrown in the yard from the firemen is gone too.  See the next page for photos of some of the cleanup.

Click here to see photos from the clean up stage of our rebuilding and getting back open to rescue. Once we start building I will post those photos too on this site so stay tuned.
