Sad Dachshund Rescue NW Facts:
We are always getting more and more phone calls and emails asking us to
help more and more dogs each year no matter how many we help and get fixed before placement. So in 2006 just out of
curiousity we counted just how many folks in this area requested our rescue's help in rehoming their homeless dogs for the
year. The alarming count was 80 dogs in addition to the 30 that we helped in 2006! That is 110 Dachshunds
needing new homes and we are just one rescue of one breed and mixes in a smaller town.
It was even more calls in 2007 so please think before you breed or at least
get your pups fixed before you find them new homes so we do not rescue descendants of dogs that you bred. Did you know
that "just one litter of pups" can be 64,000 descendantsa within a few generations? Scary, isn't it?
Please, please, please do spay and neuter your pets unless they are
papered, proven show dogs as this breed is being horribly overbred with backyard and puppy mill breeders. No matter
how many dogs that we and others help each year most rescuers like us and shelters are still being overrun with unwanted dogs
needing new homes. And that is papered and pampered purebreed pets as well as mixes of all sizes, shapes and colors
being destroyed/killed each year because folks had to have "just one litter" or they never bothered to fix their pets.
And please do your research on the breed BEFORE buying a puppy to make
sure they will work with your family and your situation. Every breed has their good sides and bad sides so read up carefully
in Dachshunds for Dummies before you buy a pup or adopt an older wiener dog.
IF YOU NEED TO BUY A PUP HINTS: Please buy your
pups from a responsible breeder who has both parents on site then you can meet the parents or siblings and other relatives to
see their conformation and to make sure the pups are properly socialized then you can confirm the dog's mental state as
well as their health history BEFORE purchase. Please do research your pup's breeders before buying one of
their pups and ask for referrals from folks who have purchased one of their pups in the past too.
Please do not buy pups for holidays as that dog is not anyone's priority
for that day. Think of what is best for your new puppy as a family member and letting them be part of your home without
holiday excitement is best for them.
Thanks!
