Bred for color, wieners lose healthy genetics. Found a home in 2005.

With rescuing 50+ dogs each year we can't list all our rescue's references on this page, but here are a few of our favorites over the recent years with some darn cute photos of happy dogs in their new homes.

Can we post your wiener reference for our rescue here too?  Email Margo at dragoonfr @ hotmail.com (delete the spaces before emailing)  Thanks in advance for sending us an email on how we have helped you and your family by adopting one of our many dogs at our rescue since 1991.

Without many folks over the years who are willing to adopt our homeless dogs then we could not rescue as many as we do each year.  Thanks everyone for helping us help those who can not help themselves, the needy wieners, or for keeping them out of area very overcrowded animal shelters.

Sincerely,
Margo

Kitty and Kooka

When we made the trip from Bellingham to visit your Dachshund rescue farm in late April, we had anticipated adopting Bullet based on our email correspondence.  Karen, Doreen's sister, had come along with us just for the ride to eastern WA.  When we met Kitty and Kooka, we loved them immediately and just couldn't leave them behind, and were so pleased when Karen decided to adopt Bullet for her own.  So the three of us returned home with three wieners.

Kitty and Kooka are at home and comfortable with us and we believe they are happy to be here.  They enjoy two or three daily walks on the leash, back-yard time, and most importantly, couch and lap time in the evening and every other time they can manage it.  They are sweet dogs and we appreciate your efforts to save these and others, and to find them good homes.  We are happy they came to live with us.

We were so pleased to meet you and Carolyn and we had a great time with the whole "herd" of wieners at your home.  You are a very caring person and it is obvious that the wieners love you.  We highly recommend your rescue for consideration by anyone seeking to adopt dachshunds.  Thanks for all you do to help animals in need.

Sincerely,

Bob and Doreen Graham

After the death of our last dachshund, we knew we would go through Dachshund Rescue NW. We had been to some of their events and knew it was a very reliable rescue. In addition to adopting two fabulous dogs, we were able to access Margo's wealth of information about behavior issues and training.

Not every rescue gives you such follow though. Margo, Carolyn, and Dennis truly love dachshunds, which is reflected in their dedication to the breed.

I met Margo two years ago at a Wienerfest Dachshund party at Airway Heights. We've become good friends and I would like to acknowledge all the hard work Margo is responsible for.

I help with the rescue, but Margo does most of the work. Margo and Dennis keep the dogs until they are retrained since most come with abuse and behavior problems. Some dogs are with the family for months and months. And then Margo has to emotionally let go when they leave.

Margo finds not just homes for unwanted dogs, but also quality homes with people who love their new Dachshund as much as we do like children.

I also adopted a rescue puppy from Margo myself and she matched our personalities perfectly. Tara is now one of our mascots for the rescue. I can't speak highly enough for Margo’s work.  I respect her dedication and love for the dogs in her care.

Sincerely,

Carolyn S.

Dachshund Rescue NW Assistant Director 2005

UPDATE 2007: Carolyn and Ron have now adopted two our of recycled wiener dogs Tara (pictured top left in the cowboy outfit) was first and now Ben Ben.  There is no greater compliment for our rescued dogs and what we do as a rescue then when folks will come back to get more then one dog from us.  Thanks for adopting, Dennis and Margo

I adopted Frances in March of 2005 to be a companion to my Dachshund, Elsbeth, who just lost her "sister" at age 15.  Elsbeth was 9 and needed an older companion and from the moment I saw Frances on the internet I knew she was the girl for us.  From the day we picked her up at Dachshund Rescue NW Frances fit immediately into our home and into our hearts.

She was housebroken and learned to use the doggy door within 2 days.  Frances also competed in the Weiner Dog races and placed first in her group and ninth in the final race (last but we were all pround of her green participation ribbon!).  [Dachshund Rescue NW runs the Wiener Dog Races at Pet Fest each June.]

My daughter says she has a sweet aura about her, she is gentle with the grandkids and does a great high five with her left foot!

Margo [and Dennis] do a good job of providing these dogs with a loving environment and training before they go to a new forever home.  I have personally been to the farm and observed some extremely happy and well cared for rescue weiners!

Connie W.
Coulee City, WA

UPDATE 2008:  Connie usually hears about wieners in need in her area.  She then delivers then to us a couple each year to be retrained and rehomed.  It is now Nov. 2008 and Connie has just sent us her latest charge, Cocoa, needing a new home.  Dennis and I are gateful that Connie trusts us enough to find these homeless babies new homes plus attending events with Francis so we can see how she was doing.  Not only was Francis morbidly obese when Connie met her plus she was a senior wiener which most people do not want older pets.  So thanks Connie for getting all that extra blubber off of Francis so she can live a happier and healthier life and run in the races each year and anyone who adopts a senior will always have a special place in our hearts.  Sincerely,
Margo

August 2009

Margo and Dennis Mossburg are amazing!  I visited their "Weiner Ranch" for just 5 hours and was exhausted having two dozen doxies clammoring for attention, barking in chorus, chasing balls, and following their every move.  I don't know how they do what they do and maintain their sanity!  And I was impressed Margo knew every dog and their personalities and habits.  She is really involved and working with the dogs to know so much about each one.  Every dog was well cared for and looked healthy with a shiny coat.  The dogs have a very large fenced yard with a wading pool and shade trees.  There is a ramp next to the steps for those who have trouble navigating stairs.  There is a separate enclosure for the geriatric dachsies.

And Margo invited me to sit in her yard, observe the dogs, and choose the ones I thought would be the best match for our family.  I was able to ask many questions about the dogs and observe their behavior and interaction with the other dogs.  Margo and Dennis not only provide a caring home for the dogs they take in, but teach them how to behave, housetraining, socializing with people and other dogs.  And all the dogs love them!  I saw no cowering and no mistreated animals.  Just a happy, rollicking, crazy bunch of small dogs!

We had decided to adopt two smooth haired females, but one handsome boy kept sitting on my feet and wanting to sit in my lap.  Koa had long, long hair, but there was something about his personality that made me think he'd be a good match for my husband and me. I was right..he's a great little dog!

And then there was the puppy mill girl, Emma.  I had noticed on Margo's website that Emma had a pretty face.  She was red and smooth, my favorite!  But when I met her she wouldn't let me pet her, and kept her distance.  She was beautiful, but aloof.  But over the course of the 5 hours, she hung around more and more, and I caught her looking at me more than once.  Margo told me she would be hard to place, so I phoned my husband and told him about her and the little male, and we decided to take them both home. We call them Rhett and Scarlett, and they are enjoying being spoiled rotten!

Squirt, left, with his new adopted brother Charlie
Thanks for sending us this photo.

In February of this year I began to think that my 12 year old dachshund, Squirt, was lonely and in need of a companion.  I was excited to find Margo's rescue online, and then had a few very friendly and helpful exchanges about adoption and rescues.

I saw photos and read about some possible good matches for us and made a date to bring Squirt for a visit in hopes of leaving with a new friend.
At Margo's (home) I was in for a real dachshund lover's treat with bundles of dachshunds running around in orderly excitement. It was my choice to take Charlie who was 9 but a bundle of youthful fun. The most difficult thing was to not grab two or more while I was there!

Charlie has been home with us for three weeks now and is totally a part, a favorite part, of our family. All he really wants is a lap and an occasional treat. He is happy and well adjusted which must be a testament to his happy days at the rescue.

Thanks again,

Laurie Ellis

I came across Dachshund Rescue NW on the Petfinder computer at Petco.  While the wife was waiting in the checkout line I went over to the PC and entered Pomeranian.  A dog named Scooter was shown in rescue at DRNW.  He caught my eye that moment and it was destiny.

On the way home I told my wife that Scooter was my dog and when we arrived home I started to application process to adopt him.  That process is when I first got to know Margo. She has a very thorough selection process, which thankfully I passed. Two weeks later we were the new parents of Scooter. He is everything she said and a lot more. He is my forever dog and I think he has adopted me as his forever dad.

Margo is very good with the dogs at the rescue and along with Dennis give their every spare moment to man’s best friends.

I can highly recommend DRNW to select the right pairing for your forever dog. Scooter found me, and I hope you too will find your forever dog with Margo’s assistance.

By the way, Scooter is a Pom/Chi mix, or as the vet said, “He is a purebred, Purebred Scooter!”

Penny is now living the WGL
Thanks T for sending this cute photo.
WGL = Wiener Good Life thanks for our rescue.

Penny (formerly known as Cookie) is the SWEETEST Dachshund ever! We have a Dachshund mix I took in 5 years ago and we put down 2 of our dogs in 2008. I had a doggie hole in my heart and thought maybe it was time to get a full Dachshund. I started looking on line for a rescue and found Margo’s site. I knew when I saw Penny, she was the one I wanted to meet.

I met Penny and Margo at the house of a friend of Margo’s.  The women were having a little get together with their Dachshunds, but really they said they were getting their wieners together for a Weiner Play Date. Oh my! What was I getting myself into? A houseful of wiener dogs! It was great!

Penny is a very sweet girl, and wants lots of love, no problem! She has an upcoming surgery for a hernia, which I knew when I took her.  She is a fantastic addition to our family.

What Margo [and Dennis] are doing for these elongated short legged dogs is deeply appreciated. Thank you Margo for all your efforts for our 4 leggeds!

A year and a half ago I adopted an abused female 3-year-old Dachshund from Margo.  She was just being used for a breeder and had not been socialized at all until Margo got her.

Kayla is the sweetest little creature now and getting better about being around other people thanks to Margo working with her.  When ever we go to any of the  Dachshund events she is so excited when she sees Margo or Bad Baby Bogart (Margo's own rescue dog).  Margo loves them both.  Kayla has also really bonded to me and when ever we go any place she stays right with me.

My dogs and I have been out to Margo's farm many times and all the animals  there are happy, well loved and cared for.  All the dogs love Margo very much and I'm sure sometimes it must be hard for her to give them up.  But she checks each and every person that comes to adopt one of her babies to make sure they get good homes.

Thank You Margo for having the Dachshund rescue if It wasn't for you I wouldn't have this sweet little girl I have now.

Nola is a little over a year and half old now.   We adopted her in
May/June of 2004 from your rescue.

Even though she isn't a dachshund, we are very very thankful you took her in.   She is our darling and I just knew as soon as I saw her picture posted on your site that she just had to come home with us.   She is definitely all hound - coonhound - and lets us know how she is feeling all the time.   We love her very much and will always be grateful to you for allowing us to adopt her.

We especially appreciate your carefulness in making sure your dogs are going to good homes.   That is so important.   You have a very great thing going with your rescue service.   Whenever, I know anyone is interested in adopting a dachshund, I will not hesitate in the least to recommend you to them.

Sincerely, Millie & John B.

Here's a starving wiener we took in 12/04 to DRNW.
copyright www.dragoonstudios.net 2005
Mindy is now fat & sassy. This photo is one month AFTER we were feeding her!

Our 6 year old wire-hair dachshund, Dave, has a new home thanks to Margo and Dachshund Rescue NW.  We loved Dave very much but he was a biter from an early age and, after 6 years of trying everything we could think of, we realized we had to find a new home for him.  Dave would bite randomly, friends and strangers alike, but would be super affectionate to our family and a chosen few outsiders; most people who came to our house feared him despite his small size and good looks.

In searching for a new home for Dave, I quickly realized that his options were limited; in fact, no one would take a biter and I was encourage to put him down.  I knew we couldn’t keep Dave but I was desperate to find someone who could work with him and possibly turn his behavior around.  That’s when I came across Margo and DRNW.  She listened to my story and immediately agreed to take Dave regardless of his issues.  She promised to use her extensive knowledge of dachshunds to work with Dave and give him the best shot possible at a new home and that’s exactly what she did.

Margo was wonderful with me and with Dave and she remained positive even when it didn’t look to good for Dave.  Just as she was about to reluctantly concede that perhaps Dave was a lost cause, Dave turned a corner and learned how to be a happy dog.  Without Margo’s expertise and willingness to take on a challenge like Dave, he would be in doggy heaven now or I would still be going crazy trying to insure that he did not bite every person who came through our door.

I so appreciate all that Margo and her husband, Dennis, have done for my family and for Dave and I’m thrilled to report that Dave has been placed in his forever home with people that understand his shortcomings, love him anyway and are keeping him on the straight and narrow.  Thank you, Margo; you are my hero!

Sincerely,

Carol Ford

Those of us who love dogs and dachshunds in particular recognize the valuable resource we have in Dachshund Rescue NW.  Margo knows her dachshunds.  With the able assistance of her husband Dennis and friend Carolyn she offers her rescues a safe and loving environment with rehabilitation and retraining while they wait for their forever homes.

Living as we do, in an area where large dogs are the norm, our local shelter offered little hope of finding another companion for Baca our ten year old female mini.  Our beloved forever friend Bogey passed away just before Thanksgiving.  The only dachshund puppies which were available were from backyard breeders or other even more questionable sources.  It was soon apparent that our best option was another adult dog closer in age to Baca.

Willy, a sweet five year old tweenie black and tan male who was surrendered to Margo a few months ago has become a welcome and much loved addition to our home. He is a lively, healthy boy who asks with a short bark when he needs to go outside. We are happy he is part of our lives and that we can provide him with a forever home.

If you are considering a rescue, Margo will help you every step of the way.  Read her website carefully.  She means what she says and will tell you no if she thinks she can't make a good match.  Dachshunds aren't for everyone and should never be placed in homes with small children.

If you're dedicated to these long bodied bundles of wiener idiosyncrasy you won't find more knowledgeable or devoted champions of the breed than Dennis and Margo Mossburg and Dachshund Rescue NW.

Sincerely,

Judith Karsten

Thanks for sharing this photo!
Levi was adopted in 2006 from DRNW

"Following the loss of our beloved Duke, we knew we would need to fill that empty spot in our bed.  After reading the stories we found on the Dachshund Rescue NW website, we met with Margo and her kids.

Because she spends so much time with them, she knew which dog would suit our lives.  Levi has been a part of our family for over a year now and has brought us so much joy.  We are so happy that we were able to give him another chance at a good life.  Thank you Margo!"

Margo Mossburg saved my dog's life.  It is as simple as that.

When we "rescued" Willy from an abusive home in Portland, OR we had no idea that this loving little dog could bite.  Willy's predictable violent outbursts were more than we could handle with a 3 year old and a brand new baby.  Realizing that love just wasn't enough we had to find Willy a place where he was no longer a danger to himself or others.  But where?  Every one told us that Willy needed to be put to sleep.  No one would take him...except Margo.

On a hot day in August of 2005 Margo welcomed us on to her property with open arms.  She gave us a tour and introduced us to her "herd".  Margo's dogs were well fed.  They had green grass to play in, shade and even a kiddie pool to swim in.  She loved them all...you
could tell...and they loved her.

She let us take our time to say goodbye to our beloved pet of 6 years.  Margo comforted me as I sobbed.  She really understood what we were going through.  She assured me she would give him all the love and training he needed to live a long, happy life.  Since then I have received a picture of Willy thriving on the Mossburg's farm and Margo writes me with updates whenever I ask.

Margo Mossburg is amazing.  Her devotion to these dogs is inspiring.  I miss Willy every day, but I sleep well at night knowing that he is in the care of Margo Mossburg.

Adopting Peaches (from Dachshund Rescue NW) was the best decision ever made for our family! She is a best friend and playmate to Bubba (our first doxie); someone for Bubba to be with while we are at work all day. We can't imagine life without her and wonder why anyone would ever give such a sweet dog up. If only Peaches could tell us her story. All I know is that it has a happy ending: she's part of our family now.

Thanks, Carrie L.,
