Here are some very good reasons on why you should give your dog to a rescue to help find them a  new home or choose your next dog from a local dog rescue:

Why give your dog to a rescue to find them a home or get your dog from a rescuer rather than a shelter or a puppy mill breeder:

1. Your dog interest's at heart: Rescues are usually dedicated volunteers who have your dog's best interests at heart.  We won't adopt a dog to an inappropriate home and many rescues have adoption contracts and questionnaires that potential pet parents have to fill out.  There are a few hoops to jump through for any potential pet adopter so the rescuers can be assured the new parents are a great home unlike some shelters or pet stores that will give the dog to anyone with the money without checking.

2. Rescues usually network and communicate:  We know the folks who shouldn't adopt as well.  If the rejected pet adopters have been rejected from another rescue then we probably won't let them have our dogs either.  The rescues and shelters try to communicate with each other so folks who have let their dogs get run over in the past or if they continually lose their animals they will not be able to adopt from a rescue.  We screen our people all the time.  And we know all the puppy mill breeders in our breed and make sure they can't go to that type of home.  We are professionals at placing your pet to the right homes because of many years experience in weeding out the potential bad homes.

3. We keep the pets as long as needed: A caring and loving rescue will not put down your dog.  We will keep them until they are adopted unlike a shelter or even your friends, family or neighbors.  Your next door neighbor might have their family situation change and they might need to dump your dog on someone else after you gave your dog on them.

4. We love animals: Many rescues are kind animal lovers like myself.  We want to make sure that the dogs stay happy and healthy down the road and have that in the adoption contracts that people sign with us.  (See a smaple on this site.)  And if that home needs to give up the dog for whatever reason, we expect the dog to be returned to us so we can find them a new home.

5. We know the best place to place your dog: Many rescues such as mine have a long waiting list of pre-screened families just wanting for your dog so check with a rescue first before putting them in to the newspaper.  And please do not place your pet through a newspaper ad.  You are asking for trouble.  We won't let your precious pet go to an animal research facility or a known "bad" owner because we inspect the homes of where they are going and even check out their references.

6. Breed knowledge and experience: Many rescuers like me were breeders in the past and have years of knowledge about the breed they are rescuing.  We answer all questions of the new pet parents and follow-up so the adoptions goes smoothly.  We don't rescue animals for money, but for the love and to make sure those rescued animals stay safe and happy forever.  All rescues lose money doing what we love to do, to help animals.  If we were in it for the money then we would not be rescuing unwanted pets for fun.

7. We take the pets nobody wants: There are way too many pets being bred every day for money.  Rescues take in all the "unwanted" dogs and pets that need the extra help including the major medical problems, the "dangerous" dogs that are considered "untrainable" and those that are deemed "too old" to be adopted out when placed in a shelter.  We take them all and find them homes.

8. Decrease the pet population: Rescues make sure all the pets are spayed and neutered so we do our best to decrease the pet population.  Many rescuers spend a small fortune getting other people's pets fixed.

9. We love what we do: Rescuers love what we do.  We take our job seriously of finding all the pets the best homes possible.  And we do it to save one pet at a time.

10. Spend the time needed: Rescuers will also spend many hours per dogs that includes the re-training the new dogs, researching their back grounds, observing the pet's personality and then researching the new homes and their references.  We will not rest well knowing we did not place the dog in a great home where they will be loved and cherished forever.  Your neighbor, co-worker or local shelter can't do what rescues do and that is give your dog the time they need to make them a highly desirable pet for a new family.  Do you have the time to do the necessary research on all potential pet parents and have the waiting list of people wanting your pet?  Most rescues do.

11.  We have industry contacts: We also work closely with local breeders, shelters and breed clubs to make sure all their older or other unwanted dogs are placed in rescues too.

12. We do a lot of research all around: Rescues do the research and search out the best candidates for "forever homes."  We care who gets the dogs and we check on the dogs after the adoption.  The follow-up of any rescued dogs is priceless and something that most people do not take the time to do after their pet is placed with a co-worker's neigbor's best friend.  We take the time that you might not have to place your own pet.  All of our rescued dogs are then adoptable after many weeks or even months of re-training and love.

Next time, choose to let a rescue find your dog or new home or choose to adopt from a rescue.  We save many dogs and pets from a very sad fate.
